New Video System put into Operation for the First Time During the April 3rd, 2011 Worship Service
As of Palm Sunday (April 17, 2011) our new video system has been in operation for three Sundays plus one funeral. Miraculously, just days before Palm Sunday arrived we were able to complete the installation of our third monitor screen ...this one being for the benefit of our choirs and pastor. It is a 46" screen and is located on the south wall of the sanctuary. The following report is a summary of how our project has unfolded. Also, immediately following this article you will find two collages showing various stages of the installation, testing and fine-tuning of the installation.
It was voted at the December, 2010 Board Meeting to form a Video System Committee. Video, within recent years, has become a common tool of a majority of the successful churches throughout the country. In recent years it has become increasingly apparent that a video system can be a great asset in drawing more youth and creating new family growth. Video is a particularly powerful way to enhance any service. It can stimulate a congregation through thought-provoking powerpoint graphics, aid in singing of hymns and choruses, assist with sermon presentations, facilitate in the efficient dissémination of news events, provide a means of showing movies/video clips and much, much more.
The job of the Video System Committee has been to explore appropriate equipment, software options, and pursue ways of funding for the project. It was originally estimated that approximately $3,500 would be needed to get our sanctuary equipped with the necessary monitor(s), computer and software. Initial members of the committee, selected at the December Board Meeting included Pat O'Brien, Karen McClain, Viginia Piper and Melvin Shadbolt. Added to the committee in January were John and Joan Fickler and Fran O'Brien. As enthusiasm increased it was decided to enhance the system with bigger and better LCD monitors, as well as consider a monitor screen for the pastor and choirs. It was our desire to get the system up and running by or before Easter and thus we opted to use a loaner computer and initially start out without the pastor's monitor screen. The first presentation at the Worship Service of April 3, 2011 was an overwhelming sucess according to the response of the congregation.
Thus, we are considering Phase One of our project completed. Thus far costs have totalled just under $3,700 leaving approximately $400 remaining balance to apply to Phase Two. In this second stage our plans are to purchase a monitor screen for the pastor and choirs, as well as a computer and software.
Eventually, it would be advantageous to add camera(s) and monitors in the fellowship hall and/or basement. This might have to be Phase Three of our video plans, depending on interest and funds. There have been a few times in recent years that a temporary camera/monitor system has been required for large funerals, etc., and since on-the-demand installations are time-consuming it would be nice to have a permanent installation.
